About the Assemblies

Here we include some brief descriptions and summary histories of some of the political assemblies of Europe from the fifteenth century to the earlier eighteenth, written by our collaborators, a set of experts in the history of each individual country and its assembly. This collection is not comprehensive, nor at present designed to represent the full range of assemblies that existed in the period. They give a flavour of the variety of political assemblies, ranging from subaltern and consultative assemblies, such as the Assembly of Friuli, to bodies that could claim much greater status such as the Polish-Lithuanian Sejm or the States General of the Netherlands. We are grateful to all of our collaborators for providing these sketches.
